SANTA CLARITA VALLEY BRANCH
MUSIC TEACHERS ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA

What Are the Benefits of Studying Music
with a Member of This Association?

There is nothing that can teach you the rewards of discipline and perserverance like learning to read and perform music. Not only is reading music, a great learning tool but the ultimate reward is the expression of one's self through the performance of music.

The SCV Branch has activities all during the year that students participate in including the following:

MONTHLY RECITALS which mingles selected students of the teachers' classes in a common performance

COMMUNITY SERVICE RECITALS special recitals presented for people who cannot get out and go to a recital otherwise. These performances count towards the students' community service awards at schools, scouts, etc. and are a contribution to their community

an in-depth testing procedure for music students called the CERTIFICATE OF MERIT. This exam consists of evaluations in: MUSIC THEORY, EAR TRAINING, SIGHTREADING, TECHNIQUE, IMPROVISATION and PERFORMANCE.

a THEME FESTIVAL which is a competition that encourages the perfection of works by the composers which meet the criteria of the current theme for the Certificate of Merit Theme Recitals.

MASTER CLASSES conducted by professionally exemplary teachers which involves students of the teachers of the association.

a BRANCH HONORS RECITAL where exceptional students chosen by the judges of the Certificate of Merit program perform and students chosen by the same judges may be chosen to perform at the STATE CONVENTION which occurs in early July each year

a program for students who write original compositions wherein they can send their original compositions to be evaluated, along with other students around the state, by two professional composers in the COMPOSERS TODAY program. A high score on the original compositions allows the students to try out for performance in the SYMPOSIUM, and if chosen, will perform at the STATE CONVENTION.

a program for students who improvise music. Exceptional improvisation students may be chosen to participate in the IMPROVISATION CELEBRATION at the STATE CONVENTION.

The SCV Branch meets once a month from September through June of each year and their meetings are filled with teacher enhancing materials that they in turn take to their studios and apply to their individual forms of teaching.
